unidentified nocturnal bee

We have huge bees that only seem to appear at night. They are about 1 and a half to 2 inches long and as meaty as my pinky finger. They are striped and look similar to honey bees but are smooth, not velvety. They also are attracted to light and will bang against the window of a lit room or hover around an outside light. I wonder what kind they are and are they dangerous? I live in Southern NH and i don't know of anyone else who has had this experience. Anyone know?

RE: unidentified nocturnal bee

It probably a European hornet.
