Temporarily cover ground nest

ademink

I just discovered (painfully) that there is a ground nest of yellowjackets (??) near a shrub in my backyard. I was digging up the shrub to transplant and suddenly I was in a horror movie. LOL

I'm really not sure what type of bee/hornet/wasp they are, I can't get close enough to see. I know they are nesting in the ground and look small - narrows it down, eh? :) They zip into the hole in the ground pretty quickly. It makes me wonder if it is something other than yellowjackets.

At any rate...the point....

I need to finish digging up this shrub. I don't want to kill the fellas (now that I'm not on fire anymore LOL), I'm ok with them being there for the rest of the season. I just wondered if I can throw a shovelful of dirt on the hole, finish digging the shrub and then pull the dirt back again.

Crazy?

Will it work?

Also, will they overwinter in the ground?

Thanks in advance!
