Need help identifying this bee...

Sorry to be a burden, new to bee's and needed experts help in this one.

Found this bee the other day flying around and was persistent, dove at my dog a couple times.

Had no choice but to take it out. It was about the size of my thumb, and I'm a grown man.

Then it looked like its partner in crime hovered around the area for a good 3 hours so far, and still there.

Figured I'd ask the experts in identifying it.

Looks like a wasp. Wasps and ants are all related to the honey bee. It is an interesting cast of members. The Ant is the engineer of this family, The wasp is more like the warrior and the Bee is the chemist. But anyway it's a wasp. I think

Wasp don't get to be the size of a thumb.
