Strange Smell around Hives

Hi everyone, I am a new beekeeper, I started with two hives eralier this year. Both hives are doing well, as far as I can tell. They are very active, have been increasing amazingly well through the summer and are now filling two deeps comfortably. Throughout the summer you could smell the honey from the hives, a very pleasant sweat smell, jixed with a wax smell. However, a few weeks ago I started noticing a pretty unpleasant smell. At first I thought some dead animal was somewhere in my backyard. It seems to come from the hives, but I am not totally sure. Some days it smells like something is fermenting, on others it's just a strong unpleasant smell. Of course I am worried now that I need to do something with the bees. I have not treated them for anything, since I was told by all the epxereicned guys at the meetings that my first year old hives will be fine. Any ideas what could cause this smell? Anything I need to do treating them before the winter?

Thanks a lot.
