return of hive

Last year I had a hive of italian honeybees inside one of our exterior walls. I could hear them buzzing and squeaking very clearly from the room adjacent to the wall. I called in a local beekeeper, because I wanted to relocate the hive without harming the bees. He said it would be a big, messy, expensive job. We decided I would just let them be, and sure enough, they moved out a few months later.

Now, over a year later, they are back, buzzing around their old entry above the front door. (They never pester us, even when I work out front.) But, I don't hear them at all in the walls this time.

What do you think is happening?
