Large Bees

I was out trail riding this weekend in SW NH and I saw alot of the paper hornets nests hanging in trees. I also came across some bees that were in the hollow of a dead tree right along a dirt road. The thing is that these bees were HUGE - I have never seen a bee this large before. The were weird in color kind of a yellow cast to them. I did not have my camera but I intend to go back out and take a photo of them. It was unusually warm so they seemed quite active.

Does anyone have any idea of what they might be? or a site that I might be able to ID them on?

I tried to get photos this weekend but it was very cold this weekend and there wasn't much activity. I got a couple of photos two of the bees. They look like yellow jackets and are at least 1 1/4 inch long. I forgot my camera but will post the (not so hot) photo tomorrow. I did not want to get too close to them - they could hurt if I got stung! They are so big.

They could be "bald faced hornets" not bees . are you sure they make honey?
