Bees in Fall/Winter

We have had a hive of giant furry bumblebees living in a hole in the concrete of some steps to our house the entire spring and summer. I wanted to "get rid of them" but my kids begged me to leave them alone, and actually we kind of enjoyed watching them come and go and they never bothered us at all. If we got in the way of their hole, they would buzz around us and crawl in, and we enjoyed watching them "clean" their entrance area. Now that it is getting cold, they seem to be all dying and we sadly see more big furry dying bees every day. What happens to the hive now? Will they all just die? What happens to the queen? My kids are pretty sad to see them dying, and I wanted to tell them about the life cycle of these bees, but wasn't sure what actually happens to bees in winter.
