Siting hives

Hello. I'm planning to get started with beekeeping this coming year. I have taken a course on the topic, and have several books - so, I'm not totally ignorant. However I have found little on the following topic:

How do you prepare the ground at the site of the hive? I don't want to mow grass next to the hive, potentially upsetting the occupants. I want the area underneath the hive 'clean' enough that I will notice pests and such.

So far, my ideas are:

Create a sort of raised bed with landscaping cloth underneath and marble chips on top, bounded by landscape timbers. This way, I will have a high visibility surface (white marble) that will not require weed control/mowing.

Do you think this is a good plan? What do you do to address this issue?

Thanks for any ideas/suggestions you may have!
