My home is very english cottage looking and I want a bee skep to put into a cottage garden design. I won't raise bees in it but want it to look like the old authentic ones. anyone know where I can order one of these charming things?

At the above site, click 'Shop On Line', scroll
down to 'Gift - Misc' enter: 'skep' in the Web
Site Search box, click search. Under Apiary
Hardware, see the skep about half way down the
page (for 50 pounds stearling plus the cost of
shipping from England).
Good luck and have fun with it!

Thank you for your help. I also found one here: http://www.digeworld.com/dige/16101/page.asp?id=28#183
and have written to inquire about cost and shipping in US dollars. It seems to really have the "classic" look I have been searching for. Hope it is affordable!

That was a very cool site vmarcos68. Thank you. Many very unusual and beautiful skeps. Very expensive though. Have started wondering about making one myself. It might be fun (or not!)

It couldn't be that difficult to make one. Have you tried a search on ebay? Make sure you close up the bottom and top so you don't have any incidentals making nests in there, you could end up with bumbles or wasps or something else less desirable.

I found these instructions for how to make one and thought I might give it a whirl. If I don't succeed then I can always order one!!

I got one of the straw woven ones for Christmas last year. Early in the summer I turned it over to see what was inside: baby roaches! Yipes. I went and made dough-balls of sugar, bacon grease, flour and boric acid. Stuck a couple to the inside. A month later I turned it over and there were 3 baby geckos resting inside. And about 5 slugs curled up in a wad! I could put the beer cure in there and catch all my slugs in one convenient setting. Thinking about eating them. but the eewwwwwwwwwwwww factor is a problem.

I got a reed bee skip from Basketville in Lake George, NY for ten dollars each. 800-258-4553 They last about 2 seasons. Maybe they have one near you or you can call them and ask them to send it to you or ask where there is a store near you. Also, check out specialty stores that sell baskets. They usually also sell bee skips too.

You can also make a skip out of rope and jute. Go to your local Wal-Mart and get a few rolls of the gold color rope (sorry, don't remember the size) and jute. Start with a large circle at the bottom and put another right on top of it then secure it with jute (don't cut the jute) and keep doing this all the way up, getting narrower as you get to the top. Since it's going to be for decorative purposes you don't need to have a hole in the side. If I remember correctly, I think I also used a large needle (kind used to darn socks) to weave the jute in and out of the rope. This is just an idea. I'm sure Basketville will deliver a skip to you. They just might not have it at this time of year though. Call them to find out. Good luck, Mandy
