Identify this nest?

This nest must have been in my yard all summer, but I never saw it because of the large bush that hid it. Now that I can see it, I'd like to know whether I should destroy it. It looks a bit tattered, so maybe it's not even an active nest.

I had some bees in the garden last summer, but I can't remember lots of wasps or hornets. So, I'm assuming it's a bees nest. If it is, will the bees survive the winter?

So, any advice? Leave it or destroy it?

Looks like a rather tattered nest of either yellow jackets or baldfaced hornets.

If so, all residents are gone, the mated queens are hunkering down elsewhere.

Likely the weather will complete the nest's destruction by spring. If not, you can remove it if within reach.
