Create a wild beehive?

Given the plight of the bee, I'm wondering if I create an empty hive and just let nature take its course, am I inviting trouble or creating opportunity?

I've got a hedge of hydrangeas that are covered with bees while in bloom. Was thinking that maybe if I construct a small hive in my backyard, I could do some good.

I'm not looking for anything other than to promote bees, no honey production for use. Just to help.

Is this a viable idea?

Not European honeybees,..they take constant care, inspection for disease etc. You could help native bees, Google for mason bees, leaf cutter bees, how to build bee blocks or bumble bee house.
