Weird mold in soil of cane begonia

| I have an angel wing begonia in a pot inside my house, on top of the soil theres an odd fungus growing. It looks almost like parmesan cheese except it is a light brown and is larger. It sits only on the soil and I think it might be saprophytic soil fungus but I cant find a picture that resembles this. It has spread to another one of my plants which has the same look but also a white fuzzy almost cotton like look to it. What is growing in my plants soil and how do I get rid of it? |

| 'm afraid I can't tell you what it is, but when something like that grows in my pots I use an old fork to skim it off and stir the soil a little, and that's usually all it takes. I suppose it might indicate over-watering, tho' that is something I seldom do (my tendency is the other way!) and skipping watering for a little bit might help. Note I said a 'little bit'! Don't think it's serious tho'. |

| I agree with that diagnosis. I don't even skim the soil, but usually try to stir it a bit which seems to break up the growth. What is bad is when it is in a terrarium which is hard to stir up, but then it doesn't seem to hurt anything either. |

I agree with those who say just to stir the mildew into the soil.I think the reason you have the mold in the first place is lack of air circulation. I have the same problem because I don't have a ceiling fan and have resorted to plugging in a regular fan. It doesn't have to be on high, just enough to move the air. Also too much water will cause mold. I am told to water only from the bottom. After 2 hrs discard the rest of the water. Good Luck, Nancy |
