Light conditions for Rex Begonias

Today I bought 4 Rex begonias that I want to move out to my deck when the weather gets warm. The tag says "Medium Light". Most of my house is pretty dark as far as sunlight goes, but I do have flourescent lights in my basement that I use to grow seeds. Can I put the begonias under these lights for a few hours/day until spring? Will this be too much light (or maybe not enough)? I would actually like to keep them as house plant until spring if possible...do you think the shady conditions in my house would cause them to not thrive? Thanks for any advice.

RE: Light conditions for Rex Begonias

Hi, Lisa:
I have rex and rhizomatous begonias growing under lights, in south windows (with porch overhang so they don't get direct sun), in north windows and in west windows (with dappled shade because of a tree). All mine are grown indoors.

I watch all my plants to see how they do in differing light situations. Some of the begonias were in windows but are happier under lights; some were under lights but seem happier now that I've put them in windows.

I guess this doesn't help much, does it? :-)

Linda

But it's excellent advise, Linda!
