Potting up Shanzis

I'm growing a begonia from seed that's pretty new to the market. The picture in Park's seed catalog showed it as a large plant. They didn't say if it's tuberous or a shrub or rhizomatous, but it definitely didn't look like a semp. Is anyone on this forum growing it- it's called 'Shanzi'? I'm getting ready to put mine in pots, they're in jiffy 7's now and the roots are coming out the sides. Instead of going to a 4 inch pot I want to go ahead and use an azalea pot that is 6 inches around. Do you think that's too big? Anita

I think you will be okay to move it to a bigger pot as long as you water carefully until the plant fills the pot. Nothing worse than a wet pot that won't dry out which can lead to rot.

I have looked at the same plant but haven't made the leap yet. Let us know how it goes.

I'm trying the Shanzi's as well this year. I haven't found a thing about what kind of begonia this is either. I'm still searching. I think they will be fine in your 6 inch azalea pot.

My seeds are just starting to sprout. I got a slow start this year on them. I hope they are as nice as Park's claims they are.

So has anyone found out more about this begonia?

I had the same questions.

Thanks!

If I post in hope of moving this thread to a more visible place, will we get any information on their progress???

Hi, K, I was disappointed. I think the weather was hard on mine, we had record rainfall this year and there's a big difference in the one on a covered patio and some grown outdoors. I'll post pictures of both at the begonia group. I'm anxious to see if they formed a bulb. They never formed the pretty green foliage that was in the catalog, it seems bronzy to me. It's pretty, but I prefer green. Anita
