angel wing begonias HELP!

I think I have identified a plant I have as an angel wing "cane" type begonia. It is doing very well indoors, getting new foliage , but no blooms. It's only been really getting new leafage since I repotted it in the fall. Should I repot and put it outside for the summer? I live in Maine and the only place I could put it is on a deck that has afternoon sun. I would really love to see some flowers. It seems to be very happy in my kitchen in front of a window that gets morning sun. Help would be appreciated. Thanks

Gwenhart, angel wings seem to thrive outside in Florida, so it would seem that they would do great outside during the summer. Be sure to gradually acclimate them to the outside. Good luck, Lynne

You could try an experiment--since it's doing well inside, try taking a cutting so you can 'have your cake and eat it', and put one outside and keep one inside. As the days grow longer the light inside will probably get better, so maybe you'll get blooms inside, and maybe you'll find the one outside does better than you'd dared to dream! Always a good idea to have a back-up when you're experimenting, I think. In case you haven't tried cuttings, canes are a good place to start. Just cut a stem with, preferably, four sets of leaves (three will do) and take off the bottom pair or two of leaves (two if you have four sets, one if you just have three). Be sure to have the node (where the leaves were) well beneath the soil. I have read on here that nodes that have bloomed won't make roots, but if yours hasn't bloomed you won't have to worry about that. I haven't really paid as much attention as I should have, but I haven't made that observation myself. My first begonia 'guru' used to say, 'if you want a big begonia, put it in a big pot.' At that time I don't think we had small canes, at least not available there, so that advise isn't always as good as it was then, but I have stuck one cutting in the middle of a ten- or twelve-inch pot and had beautiful big begonias doing that. Wouldn't recommend it with a small grower.
