Rex Begonias - How much light do they need?

Posted by pennyonwings (My Page) on

I have read different things about the light needs of Rex Begonias. Some say they will be more colorful if grown in a darker location, yet mostly I have read that they need bright, indirect light. I have heard that the colors will fade in bright light. I just got these plants, so I have no experience here. I am growing them indoors as house plants. Any input would be appreciated.

RE: Rex Begonias - How much light do they need?

Sort of in a nutshell,
Light yes
sun no.
Last fall I got a beautiful plant with almost black leaves. As the days were getting short I put it at the side of the window with the blinds open. After about 3 days I noticed the leaves were getting crispy areas. I think the dark color made it absorb more heat and it burned. I rescued it but am being more careful now that the sun is getting more intense again.
More light definately gives better color and they will grow faster too.
