Are there different types of tuberous begonias?

I bought some begonia tubers in bags last year and I also bought some started tuberous begonias in 6" pots. They all bloomed well, but the already started plants were especially productive. When it was time to dig them up in the Fall, I was really surprised that the purchased plants had no tuber to speak of, whereas my saved tubers were fine. Why would that be? Should I have heavily fertilized the pots in order to help the tubers develop? Or were they just different types?

No, all types are pretty much the same. The 'started' plants were created from either seeds or cuttings and they start producing tubers when daylight starts to lessen in August. You may try keeping them going as long as possible, but I've nothad much luck, the tuber formations are tiny and I don't bother with them anymore. If I have a favorite tuberhybrida, I have luck keeping a cutting going over winter under lights.

Thanks for answering my question. I have a fairly short growing season, so that's a good suggestion of trying to overwinter some cuttings.
