Question about begonia tubers

Posted by gardenfanatic MO zone5 (My Page) on

I got some non-stop begonia tubers and they sat around in their bag for a few weeks until I got around to potting them up. Most of them had sprouted already, but not a sprout like any other plant I've seen. I have no experience with growing these type of begonias, so I have no idea what's normal, or what's needed.

When I put them in pots, I covered them with about 1/2" potting soil, so some of the sprouts were sticking out of the soil. Because of that, I put those under lights. It's been about a week, and I've seen little to no growth.

The other pots that didn't have sprouts sticking out of the soil, I put on a heating pad. Will that help or inhibit growth? They're showing no signs of life. How long does it usually take for begonia tubers to get going? Did they sit around for too long to still grow?

Thanks,
Deanna

I always wait for my tubers to sprout before planting them. The sprouts start out pink. And they are slow to get going. Yours are probably fine. Just don't overwater them or the tubers will rot.

I also have no experience with growing these type of begonias; just received 6 tubes and they have sprouted the
little pink sprouts. Now, don't laugh to hard but is this
little pink sprout a leave sprout or a root sprout... which
ends up??? So pink sprout up or down??? Thanks

Granny,

I found out they're supposed to have these sprouts before you plant them. The sprouts go up - they're the stem.
