Question about begonia blooms

Posted by gardenfanatic MO zone5 (My Page) on

I started nonstop begonia tubers for the first time this year. I was reading to pinch off the side shoots to encourage bigger blooms. I have no idea what this means.

My begonias are blooming, but they sure don't look like the pictures. The blooms are underneath the leaves, and they aren't full with so many petals.

I also read to cut off "female" blooms to encourage "male" blooms to develop to their full potential. I have no idea which ones are "male" or "female."

Can anyone give me the "Begonias for Dummies" version? Thanks,

Deanna

RE: Question about begonia blooms

I don't pinch my begonias at all and they get big beautiful blooms up until frost. The small flowers you are seeing are the female flowers. Pinch them off if you want.

RE: Question about begonia blooms

my question Is can you rebloom a reiger begonia. I read that when they stop blooming to cut them back to three Inches and put In a cooler place until they start new growth agian. I also read somewhere to just keep them where they get god light and they will rebloom again. which Is correct? mine Is still giving out a bloom here and there and Is getting quite tall with alot of new leaves. what should I do? thanks
