What ate my begonia?

My friend gave me several plants last night, which I left on the back patio. This morning the begonia was eaten to the roots, while none of the other plants were touched. There was a blooming plumbago right next to it -- not a mark. Are there animals that are known for liking begonias? All I found on the internet said that deer do NOT like them. I haven't ever had a plant eaten by anything other than slugs, although my yard backs up to the woods. Anyway, I'll keep the begonia inside and see if it will bounce back -- any tips for helping it?

Many thanks, as always, for all the support and advice shared on this forum.
