It would be two weeks from the time you put it down in the mix; however, some of my begonia cuttings have rooted more slowly than that and even when you see the first root it will be too small to pot up, you need several roots maybe a quarter of an inch long, to give the cutting the strength it needs to survive on its own. Putting two cuttings together gives a better chance of faster rooting. And be sure to soak the cuttings, they should be firm (turgid) to root.

Plants have rooting hormones called auxins which come into play under certain conditions, and cuttings have this ability.I can't recall the technical terms but basically this is what happens; putting two cuttings together increases the chance of rooting because there are more auxins.Plant propagation can be fun - I think the most important advice, though, is to make sure those cuttings are well soaked and firm before you start.

Wow, thanks for the advice & cool info. Plant teamwork, fascinating. Wonder if this goes into effect if one sticks different kinds of plants (as cuttings) in the same pot, or if it only plays out with several cuttings of the same plant.

I agree, propagating plants IS fun! The propagation forum keeps me coming back too.

I've taken this idea beyond Begonias and have been putting multiple cuttings of whatever I'm trying to propagate together either in water or a pot, depending on plant. Except for squirrels veto'ing some of my experiments, everything is going well.
