I'm having trouble with my double begonias

This is my first year planting begonias - I spent about $200 at lowe's garden center on the prettiest, healthiest looking double begonias to line my driveway. I chose them because the spike said full sun. I was so proud at first as they were very green and full of blooms. But now, just a month later, they are brown, full of holes, with pale leaves. I'm not sure what to do. It was too much of an investment to replace. I don't think they are being watered too much, but they do get alot of sun. Is there something I can do?

Do you know what kind of double begonias you have? If they're semperflorens a lot of people say they'll take full sun, and I see them with some regularity in commercial establishments planted along the driveways and parking spaces. I've never seen any that looked other than thoroughly miserable. That's a hot dry situation more suitable to cacti in my opinion, but they keep being sold for that use. My first begonias were semps and I love them dearly, but I wouldn't recommend them for full sun, at least here. Maybe back home in the Pacific Northwest. Lots of different climates out there! They will probably take full sun in the morning, at the edge of the lawn rather than the driveway. Can you do that? $200 is a lot of money not to use to maximum benefit! They also do well in pots, but that's a lot of pots too! If they're tuberous, you should go scream at the people at Lowe's (well, not really--they don't generally pay well enough to hire people who know anything about plants, tho' sometimes they manage to get some anyway.) But recommending tuberous for full sun is criminal (in my not at all humble opinion!) Actually I can't think of any begonias I'd recommend for full sun beside the driveway.

I agree with greenelbows. Begonias are fairly tender. If you were farther north, some fibrous rooted cultivars might do okay, but as far south as you are, in full sun, I seriously doubt the ability of any begonia to survive all summer.

Its a sin to spend 200 on tuberous begonias from Loews.Get fewer begonias and buy them From Whter Flower Farm -they get theirs from England,or if you want more buy from Antonnelis in California.Tuberous begonias deserve the best.

In a best case scenario, they would have drip irrigation and mid-day shade. I grow all my tuberous in pots (Clay). Stevens uses plastic but they are grown in a covered area so he runs no risk of overwatering which is easy with tuberous. A full day of rain and you will get broken stems and rotting leaves.
