Begonia problem

I have begonias planted at my entryway and most are having some sort of problem. 1 of 4 planted in a pot was the first I noticed. I thought that something had fallen on it and knocked off most of the stems and leaves. The same set-up in another pot 2 feet away is fine, so far. Then I noticed that those planted in boxes hanging on the rails nearby were looking the same. The stems, leaves, and flowers are drooping then falling off. They are slimy/mushy. Drainign shouldn't be the problem - especially in the boxes. Does anyone have ideas about what is happening and what I can do about it?

RE: Begonia problem

Debbi,

From what you are describing, it sounds like rot. Is/was the soil ever allowed to dry out between waterings? Depending on what type begonias they are, you may be able to propagate from any healthy looking pieces that are left.

RE: Begonia problem

mt mama . same thing happened to my tuberous begonias last year. I thought maybe there was a virus in my soil, so this year I planted new ones in pots and deck railing boxes with new clean soil. Now one of them has died with the same symptoms, slimy stem and broken off leaves. Hope someone can offer suggestions on what to do. and yes, i admit that, despite lots of rain this summer, I have allowed them to dry somewhat between waterings. Tina
