I have this begonia:

which is doing well. When the flowers are finished there is a seed pod left on the stalk. Has anyone ever tried to grow these? Can I grow them? Will they grow?

I thought Tuberous Begonias bloomed in total shade but mine are growing tall and stringy with no blooms. I just moved them into about 50% sun. Should that work?

I would like to know the same thimg also. I've wanted to grow both tuberous and rex begonias from my own seeds, but I don't seem to be able to get viable seeds. Is there some trick to getting begonias to set viable seeds?

You would have to go online to the begonia site, I lost the address. They said if we handle the seeds with our hands, it does something to the seed, like contaminate it, and they will not grow. That was news to me. I have a whole paper cup full of begonia bonfire that I just clip off, and they drop into the cup. Don't plan on starting them myself, but will send them to someone that loves to do this.

RE: Tuberous Begonia

I took about 6 pods off various tuber begonias last year, and only 1 pod had any germination. BUT, I ended up with 2 begonia plants this year! I let them air dry inside until it was time for sow (early December). Basically, pulled apart the pod and rubbed the seeds loose onto the soil. Moisten, cover and keep warm. Nothing happened for 2 weeks, but some greenery shot up after that, and it was so SLOW growing until February. Then it really plugged along, with careful watering and light fertilizing, and I placed them in the full sun (south window) whenever possible. Kept them in the coolest part of the house at night (about 60F). Got as big as the ones you buy at the nursery come May and lookin' good! I recommend you gather a bunch of dried pods and experiment. It wasn't hard, just needed lots of patience!
