Begonia Grandis Newbie

Hello to fellow begonia lovers- I am new to having begonia grandis in my garden- this spring I ordered several single stem plants from Heronswood and not knowing any better I planted them 4 to a spot. Was this correct or should I have planted the stems singly and expected them to spread? The clusters of plants are doing very well, lots of flowers now, but next year I wanted to see if my budget would stretch farther by planting singly - what do you reccomend? Thanks so much for any advice! John

RE: Begonia Grandis Newbie

I wouldn't worry about moving the ones you have - their hardiness will be enhanced by leaving them in place for now. The plants will spread on their own over time - actually, I have several forms of B. grandis, and they've become delightful "weeds" all over the garden, colonizing any relatively moist spot in sun or shade. The easiest way to spread them is to collect the bulbils that will form in a month or two in the leaf axils (where the leaf stem, or petiole, attaches to the main stem of the plant), and scatter them immediately where you want new plants next year.
