Help, My begonia bulbs are rotting.

I have 15 begoina growing in pots from bulb; some are hanging some are upright. One or two of the plants broke at the base of the bulb. When I went to dig the bulb out and store for next year, it just broke into many pieces. Why? How do I dig the other ones out after they die back without dameging the bulb. I really love them and want to use them next year.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

With the ones that broke, were they also mushy? I've never heard of the tubers falling apart, unless they were rotten already. I'm interested what others will say, since I have some to dig up soon, hope they won't rot or fall apart.
