Hi,
At a plant swap over the weekend, I received three cuttings of Angel Wing Begonia. The swap was anonymous, so I could not ask the owner about culture.
Having looked at the ABS site, Logee's and another site recommended in previous discussions, I still have a few questions.
Mine is a cane begonia, the individidual cuttings range from one to two feet. They were already rooted so I potted them together in an eight inch tall pot.
Here are my questions:
It is in regular potting soil with vermiculite and perlite mixed in. Will that be alright?
If I take stem cuttings, will the lower cane sprout new branches?
Can cuttings be rooted in water?
Thanks in advance,
Elsie |

| The soil should be okay. I grow mine in african violet soil with perlite mixed in. I think the key is fast draining. If you take cuttings, it should branch out usually where you took the cutting. Cuttings can be rooted in water. It is helpful to have some bottom heat especially during the Fall and Winter (while rooting). My last cuttings I just potted up into soil and they seem to have all taken root. Canes are very easy to grow. My faves are the superba (larger ones). Mine grow in a room in my house about 2 or 3 feet from bright windows. Hope this helps, Susan |

good questions, elsie. the soil mix should be fine for your canes. once they've established and seem healthy in their new location you can take cuttings of the canes. new leaves, roots and branches will grow from the nodes of the canes, so make sure that you have 2-3 per cutting. you can root in water, or you can root in a light mix--make sure it's not too wet or you'll have a rot problem. the older canes should grow new leaves/side branches from any nodes you've left behind. best to leave a couple, at least. in addition, new basal shoots will appear...maybe one or two a year from each of your rooted canes. good luck! -ming |

| I have had a recent accidental breakage with my angel wing begonia. The leaves and flowers were severed from the stalk. The plant is approximately 7 inches tall with four leaves and one flower bunch. Is there a way that I could save either one or both parts of the plant? Thanks Jenny |

| Your rooted stub will send out new growth. Be patient and don't overwater. For the top, cut the bottom leaves off (leave the top two or three) and remove the blooms; push the stem into good potting soil (no heavy soil); water in; and place in a semi-shady location out of direct sun. The top should root in a week or two. You can also root the top in water but check the water level and quality every day or so, when roots appear it should be okay to pot up. |
