Confused about tubers/root hairs

| I want to try and overwinter the ordinary little begonias that you can purchase at Lowe's/HDepot... Also, I have some pretty red begonias with large leaves, but not sure which ones they are - but they are also the "run of the mill" begonias you see all over. If I dust off the dirt all I see is root hairs - are the tubers so small that I can't feel them? I can't feel anything that resembles a tuber. Are they very small? Should I hose the dirt off and dry them good before putting the root hairs along with about three inches of stem in peat moss? (I am trying to preserve them for the winter as an experiment)
Any help would be appreciated - Thanks Carrie |

| Semps make excellent house plants, in case you haven't heard that. Before they were so easy to find I grew some special ones for years--sorry I lost them. Probably one of many moves. Gardeners and moving aren't good combinations! |

| Thanks, green - Yes, I've had wax begonias for years and I know they make good houseplants but I don't have houseplants because of our pets. I have a lot of begonias that are in huge pots and now have them lined up against the garage wall for the winter. I originally posted this thread because I thought (for whatever reason) that one type of wax begonias was a tuber begonia - and now I realize it isn't. All the wax begonias are staying in their pots overwinter and they will be fine - especially because if it gets really cold during the night later on - I have tons of frost blankets to keep them warm for those few hours - Thanks for your reply - Semps... another word for wax begonias I am assuming. You learn something new everyday. Carrie |

| Properly it's 'semperflorens', which means always flowering, which they certainly do! I'm on a special begonia kick right now 'cause I'm giving a program on them Thursday, and I've been studying and remembering and grooming and potting--and dreaming(!) begonias. |
