rhizome cuttings

I have a 'Madame Queen' that has gotten pretty leggy and I think I'm going to do some rhizome cuttings. While I am a very experienced gardener outdoors, I am slightly inept with houseplants. It's only because this begonia is tough as nails that it is still alive :-)

I understand the principle behind the rhizome cuttings but I do have some questions. First, is now an OK time to do this or is another time of year better ? (the plant is putting mucho new growth) And how far back can I go? All the way to where the rhizome is rooted now? And will it resprout from the cut surface like the rhizome chunks are supposed to?

Any other tips or pointers you can provide will be appreciated.
