Propigating Fiji Islands Begonia

Posted by paxmom zone 5 (My Page) on

I have done some resurch and found lots of conflicting ways of propigation for Fiji Islands Begonia. Some say leaves but others say you can't get a true plant from a leaf only from crown. I have never done begonia's before. I am just now getting back into my plant after having not been able to for many years. Any help would be great. Thanks Annette

RE: Propagating Fiji Islands Begonia

Yoy can propagate Fiji by leaf stem, piece of rhizome, or even by the cone method and the resulting plant will be true. However if you propagate B. 'Cathedral' (sometimes incorrectly known as B. 'Cathedral Windows') from a leaf you will get B.'Fiji Islands', but if you propagate 'Cathedral' from a piece of rhizome you get 'Cathedral'. Obviously there is some connection between 'Fiji' and 'Cathedral', but the origin of both is obscure. This information originated with thelate Elda Haring who wrote extensively about begonias.
