Will begonias work for me?

| I live in North Dakota and have a southern facing front porch that I would like to plant begonias for the summer. I would like to start the Illumination Series begonias by seed in January. My question is, how much heat can they tollerate? Even though I live in ND, it will stay consistantly above 85 degrees in the summer, many times it is hotter on our porch. They will be on automatic watering twice a day.
I just don't want to get a bunch of plants going only to not have them bloom because of the heat. My fusia didn't bloom last year when it got hot. |

| I'm not familiar with the Illumination Series specifically, but generally I think tuberous begonias need to cool off at night. Maybe even prefer lower humidity in the daytime. I grew tuberous begonias when I lived on the West Coast, where they have both those conditions, but never tried them when I lived in Nebraska (grew quite a few other begonias tho') and tried a few that were supposed to be more tolerant of heat and humidity here in south Louisiana, where I found they didn't like as much as we have anyway. But there are many, many others-----! Of course, it is sometimes an advantage to have them dormant in the winter! |
