I looked this one up since it wasn't familiar.According to the link below it is a threatened species so I doubt you would be able to aquire the collected plant although the seed might be available through a licensed nursery. This paper says that in a season only 7 to 15 percent of the plants have any bloom so if the bloom is what attracts you, you would have to grow a lot of it. Even if you do grow it, it seems that to maintain it you would need a buffer zone of 500 feet to protect it from runoff, fertilizer, contaminants, etc. Sandy
If you're ever up in the New England neck of the woods than you may want to stop by the New England Wild Flower Society, where they propagate and sell many native and bog genus/species of plants, including Helonias bullata. The original plant that I had purchased (a our local NARGS 'rare' plant auction - many plants grown from seed by other members, etc) flowered the first spring after its summer planting...it has since just formed new plantlettes at its base... maybe I should divide it to see if that will promote more blossoms...now there's an idea. ;o)
Hey, Lily So, you got it to bloom! You are my new hero. I have heard a lot about the difficulty in getting it to bloom. I want one anyway. I have stumbled upon that NEWFS site often - they have a lot of cool things listed. If only they shipped their plants. What conditions do you have your swamp pink growing in?
I ran across Siskiyou rare plants on a post about helonias a while back. They do offer it for sale and do ship. Here's a link...you gotta buy them in groups of 3.
I bought these seeds from them last year, but my never germinated. I don't think the seeds were fresh? And emailed 2 people that grow these plants, but they kept giving me the run around. Does any one have these?
