Very wet area...

I'm trying to find some plants that I can put in an area at the edge of my yard which thrives in very damp conditions. I live on a large hill and I believe there is a spring at the top. We built our home about 3 years ago and that area stays very wet. In the Winter it is like an ice rink out there.

I also read another post where the poster had conditions similar to mine. However, whereas they appeared to have a VP, I believe I have a marsh as it stays wet all year and most of the time has visible standing water. I can go out at any time and find orange salamanders.

I'm mainly trying to soak up some of the water to keep it away from our foundation and secondarily make it more visually appealing.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

RE: Very wet area...

I don't know if there are any plants that will help drying the area out, but there a plenty that will do well in the moisture. Siberian and japanese iris would do well, also cardinal flower (lobelia), astilbe and many ferns and ornamental sedges. In the moist areas that maybe don't flood in winter you could plant hostas and phlox paniculata.
Try a few shrubs too. Red twig dogwood can handle sitting in water and comes in a showy variegated form, clethra (sweet pepperbush) is fragrant and showy, and you need some pussywillow to wake the place up in spring.
Those suggestions should be easy to find. There are tons of other plants too.
