How to contain peat in a heavy downpour?

I have just started to look into bog gardening, and I bought a small streamlet from a garden center as part of a pond set up. From reading a few of the postings, I'm probably going to put marginals in it, but I wanted to know how to keep the peat moss mix from overflowing the edges and going everywhere in a heavy rain storm? I probably won't even sink the container into the ground, just place potato rock and other stuff to hide the sides and set the whole thing next to my small goldfish pond on level ground. Should I put netting or something over it to keep it in place? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
charjar

Charjar,

This hits on one of the key elements of bog garden design, drainage. Yes, I know it sounds paradoxical, but bog gardens should be allowed to drain so that there is rarely standing water. Sometimes after a large rainstorm mine will flood a little but it always goes back down in a few hours, and never overflows.

There are many different philosophies about how to provide drainage and how much. Many people poke holes in their liner. I prefer to angle the entire garden ever so slightly so that it drains out one end.

The key thing to remember here is that a good bog garden remains moist, but should rarely be flooded or soggy.

Here is a link that might be useful: Bog Making

Thanks for the info on the drainage. I thought the ground was supposed to have standing water on it, glad you told me otherwise.

Be sure to moisten the peat before you put it in your bog. Mix it with water in a seperate container/wheelbarrow. Once it is moist I doubt it will overflow much.
