I got a bog for Mother's Day

Hi all. Yesterday afternoon my husband, daughter, son and daughter-in-law all ganged up on me. They made me sit down and watch as they hauled over my whiskey barrel, placed it on blocks (to keep the bottom wood from contact with the ground),leveled it and proceeded to mix sand and peat and water and have a grand old time putting together my new bog. They even remembered the perferated pipe. It's sitting in a sunny location in the front garden right off the front porch so I can sit and watch it grow. Every once in while my son would go out and stir it to make sure there were no dry pockets. We had one small leak at the bottom but as the peat absorbed more water and the wood started to swell it stopped.
I had decided to use no liner and no drainage holes (Guess this one small leaky spot now counts as a drainage hole.)This morning I put a cover layer of dried sphagnum and wetted it down
Now for the planting, I can't wait. WooHoo.

Definitly native pitchers, after that I'm not sure. I'd love some orchids but don't know if a half barrel is big enough for them as well as the pitchers. Any suggestions as to plants that will stay low but trail that I can plant along the edges and have them drape over the sides? judy |

| Hi Judy, Vaccinium macrocarpon might work. It's the native cranberry and is a trailing groundcover that likes wet acidic soil. Pretty flowers and berries as well. If it's happy it will take off so you just need to keep it in check. Orchids are great fun in the bog. Rose pogonia and Calopogon are native, pretty easy and can be found commercially (ethically). Dactylorhiza is a European bog orchid that's very easy as well. There's always enough space for orchids! ;o) Good luck! Have fun! |
