When can I plant my gunnera outside?

I purchased a gunnera about 2 weeks ago, ( gallon pot) and have been keeping it in the unheated greenhouse during the day, keeping it shaded- and bringing it into the house at night. Keeping it very well watered and misted whenever I go in the greenhouse. So far it looks good.
Now, here in Alberta, the day temps have varied tremendously but basically have settled down to normal type spring temps, from about 16deg. C to 24 deb. C.
It's the overnight temps, it's supposed to go down to about 2-6 deg. C overnight this coming weekend. So I don't suppose I want to put it out yet.
What would be the minimum overnight temp to wait for?
By the way, I have no intention of trying to overwinter it outside- horrors! If it makes it through the summer -- I plan on bringing it inside and keeping it in a cool room.
* I made a "container" bog for it, so I can move it inside more easily when the time comes-- |

| Is it Gunnera manicata or tinctoria (chilensis)? |

| Well, it probably doesn't matter which species it is. Now lets see, what is that in F?....OK, I would wait until evening temps are no lower than 9 or 10 degrees C for an unestablished G. manicata or tinctoria. |

It's a G. manicata. When I bought it I told the nursery owner that I wanted my very own gunnera to kill! But I would prefer not to-- Thanks for the info, I'll certainly wait to put it out. |

| ;) Actually it should like your summers. I would go with full sun up there. It won't get as pet-eatingly-massive contained like that, but should still make a nice conversation piece. |

| I'm just wondering, CAC0, and other experts! the container I will be sinking down for the contained bog garden is about a 20+ gallon pot. How large, if I'm very lucky-- would it grow in that. With good growing conditions, etc.? |

| Hmm, well, I have some experience with Gunnera and have done some reading on the subject, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. I've never contained one like that...would think it would be considerably smaller than having free roam in the ground...perhaps 3' (I've seen manicata in my zone at 12' tall with 5' wide leave) wide leaves max, well fed and watered. This is a guess. Someone else here might be more helpful. |

| Are the gunnera experts still out there? Please? I also want a gunnera--Tinctoria is what is readily available. Will it tolerate near total shade--in a shade garden in moist, but not boggy conditions? Will it survive zone 7-8 average winters (wind protected area)? Would manicata be any better a choice? If it will accept these conditions, I have perfect place for it! Thanks so much for your help!! |
