Swamp pink - source?

Posted by squirrelspur z7a NC (My Page) on

Hi:
I have emailed some nurseries that specialize in native plants but cannot find anyone who has Helonias bullata, swamp pink. Maybe because it is endangered?

Does anyone know where I can get this plant? Think I have some ideal places to grow a population as I have a creek and rather boggy wooded areas.

I purchased seed from NEWFS but did not have any germination.

Thanks much, Karen

Since this is listed in the USFWS Red Book of Endangered and Threatened species I do not believe that it is legal to sell this plant across state lines. I would suggest looking for a source of the plant within NC since it is one of the 7 states where this species is native.

Here is a link that might be useful: Swamp Pink info from USFWS

Thanks fredsbog. I have been writing to NC nurseries with no luck but am going to try the state Dept of Agriculture and see if they have a list of approved growers.

I purchased some from Siskiyou Rare Plant Nursery(Medford, OR) several years ago and they still list them in their on-line catalog. I am disappointed with the plant. Even after several years, they have never flowered and experiences at our local Native Plant Botanical Garden are the same. Published data about the species indicate that is normal, as only an extremely small pecentage of plants in wild populations bloom each year.(1 in 20 plants or less, even 0%!)
