growing sweet potato

I have just bought a sweet potato (from the supermarket). How do I start it into growth? keep it in the dark till it starts to sprout, or plant it now in a pot? I can't even tell which is the 'growing' end. I eventually just want it as a novelty pot plant, [in a bog].

Just stand it in a coffee mug, add water to cover about half the potato (I don't think it matters which end), and put in window. Change water every day or two. In a few days you should see roots under water and sprouts forming on top. I've never planted in soil, just grew as vines in water, but I'm sure after roots get a few inches long could be put in soil.

Not sure about growing in bog...maybe someone else can advise you. josh
