Dividing papyrus

We have a miniature papyrus that needs to be divided. I was told this should be done in May. When I looked at the roots, and remembered how I killed our first papyrus by trying to divide it, I ended up putting it in a larger pot. The roots seem to be an almost solid mass with no place to distinguish between different plants.
Our indoor pond is only 42 gallons and so, next May, I will definitely need to divide it. Thanks in advance for your help. philip |

| Philip, I just take an old steak knife and slice down thru middle of root ball. As to exact timing, anytime in May or June should be fine. I've even chopped a small hunk off in Fall to bring a smaller size pot inside for winter with no ill effects. They're dainty-looking but actually pretty sturdy plants. josh |
