I started with only 5 and now I have 17. I have a barrel pond so how do I know when it's too much and how do I prune then to then them down. How many should I have for a barrel pond?

There's no "rule" except what looks good to you. And if you have fish or other plants, they like to be seen, of course...smile. Just break off any extra plants. I promise you by the end of July it will probably be a weekly chore to discard extras. Aquatic plants really grow fast. josh

Where are you in Jersey? I'm just above Passaic in NY. I'd be glad to remove your cuttings.. All my hyacinth died with this last winter.. :(

If you leave them alone and let them try to crowd each other out they will start growing tall. The tallest we have had were about two feet but I've seen some that approached four feet.
They look really cool when they start stretching out.
