wild grass that cuts your legs as you walk by

I have an area that is a retention pond run-off, that turns into a natural stream, in the middle of the back of my back yard. The natural area has a wide clear, flat area that is completely covered with a grass that looks great, but make the area impossible to visit because of this mean grass. The only other plants that are there are skunk cabbage, I like those, and some ostrich, and cinnamon fern. I would like to plant other plants, is there a way I could suppress the grass in areas? Would it be futile to try?
