Swamp border

I am clueless to any type of gardening but willing to learn. I have in my back yard, between my home and a highway a swamp area that is the length of my property about 2 acres and 100 feet wide.
I just let everything alone and get trees in it and pussy willows and I have no clue as to what all is in it. My question is this, it is so colorless and I was hoping to be able to find something to place as a colorful border, something that will like the water and that I can mow right up to and it will grow vigorously. I may be asking for too much but am open to suggestions.
I also have about an half an acre on the side of my home, well about 200 feet from side of house that is swampy and I was wondering of any ideas what I can put there, I was thinking of putting some stepping stones and a bench at end and some nice colorful .... suggestions? I am hoping not to have to weed whatever I put there.
Thank you so much for your help!

Maybe try some joe pye weed and cardinal flower. You'll get butterflys and maybe some hummers too. No weeding? hmmmm.... that would be nice ;o)
