What the... Lotus seeds? What?

So my friend just got back from a business trip to China... I asked her to pick up a bunch of "strange fruit seeds" for me if she could... Gotta sneak 'em through customs & all that and we both expected them to be confiscated, but she had no problems at all.

Anyway, when she got home she boxed everything up & sent it up to me.. Longans, sweetsops, dragon fruit, rambutans, some "peach" thingy, bitter melon, and a whole bag of lotus seeds. Now I know what everything else is & how to plant them, and I've heard of a lotus.. But I hadn't a clue what to do with these:

So I came over here (Gardenweb) did a search & shortly found Margaret's post about how she sprouted hers.

One question tho- Mine are green & soft. Should I dry them first then try the "sunken germination" method, or just toss 'em in some water right now?

I'd imagine in the natural enviornment they have to dry to fall out of the pod.. But.. I've never even seen these before. Kinda clueless as "what to do" with them right now.

Thanks Much for any advice-

RE: What the... Lotus seeds? What?

i am currently growing lotus seeds. but i must say i have never seen green ones.............. but yes i do know that you have to dry them out(i did my black ones anyhow). once they are dry you need to nick the outer shell and put them in a shallow bowl filled with water. change the water daily and keep the water warm. maybe put it in a sunny window or on a heating pad. in about a week you should see the shell opening and a sprout coming out. once you see three or four leaves you can plant them. i put them in regular garden dirt and hopefully you will get a beautiful lotus plant. i hope this helps.....like i said earlier i have never seen green seeds. let me know what happens i am real interested............

Hi.
Not to disappoint you,but it would likely rot if it were to place in water.Lotus seeds germinates best if dried, brown seeds. These green lotus are often use as a kind of snack in Asia,go to flickr and you probably see many of them photos showing green lotus pods in their hands as a form of snack.Trust me!
Give it a try,and see.
