Hey MBT, funny meeting you here. This forum has been pretty dead for some time. I have pitcher plants of all flavors here in Z7. I also have friends with outdoor pitcher plant bogs in Vermont, CT, and MI.

I can only tell you what has worked for me from my own experience but I think you have the right idea. I mulch my bog with pine needles then cover it with a burlap tarp. I cover that with a thick layer of leaves and evergreen boughs. I think if you bury your pot it should regulate the temps some, then just mulch like mad. Moisture doesn't seem to matter too much when they are dormant. Most of these are surprisingly hardy and people push zones on them. One poster I haven't seen in a long time (helloooooo Fred?) doesn't mulch and I think he was a zone 6. Savage garden is a pretty good book for these.
