RE: query

My Sunset Western Garden Book which is very good at cross referencing does not list an English common name for Synadenium granti but googling came up with African Milk Bush. I think I would prefer Synadenium granti myself.

RE: query

I just purchased 2 8" Synadenium granti "Rubra" from Home Depot. The head gardener saw them somewhere and ordered them for herself. I was lucky to find the last 2 there. It is labeled "African Poinsettia" and described as follows:
"Grows quickly to 4' with much branching. Great for landscapes. Drought and heat tolerant. Water thoroughly when dry. Full Sun. Same family as Euphorbias."

Caution: the sap is said to be very caustic and may cause a painful skin rash and serious eye problems. I grew the burgundy-leaved form many years ago and it was known as "Dead Men's Tree" or "African Milk Tree". In my opinion these two common names should have been combined to warn folks of the dangerous sap.

Mine was grown as a houseplant as it would not be hardy here. In summer it did well outside and leaves colored up beautifully. In winter inside my home it lost some older leaves and the new leaves were a dull green. I passed it on to a friend when my son was born...there were so many other safer plants with burgundy leaves to try. josh
