Reading about the new ''seed vault'' in Norway...

Reading about the new "seed vault" in Norway I got to wondering -- has anyone successfully extracted all the genetic material from one seed and replaced the genetic material of another and got a viable plant?

If one could just store the genetic material and there was no need to store the whole seed then the conditions of a "vault" should be easier to maintain, I should think.

Too expensive to do it that way!

Sorry, I was not thinking about cost considerations.

Has the storage of genetic material been done? Could the storage of genetic material in theory be done?

It's been done with ova, don't know about plants.

Er, why? A seed is specifically designed to store that information reliably. They want reliability, so I expect they'll go old skool. Someday we may be able to store that stuff as a string of letters, and build a sample from just whatever's in the book, but this ain't that day.
