Can someone explain to me the physiological basis for why red and pink forms of Cornus florida don't flower in Florida while the white forms do?. What are the origins of the the rubra forms of C. florida?

I seem to have read that a virus infection has altered the genetic pattern of Cornus florida so red is now expressed instead of white. Almost any good text on genetics will probably offer good information. Also, I understand that grafting a red Dogwood scion onto a white stock will infect the recipient so that entire tree will eventually become red.
