Photosynthetic pigments in energy capture

Could some please explain to me in easy to understand terms what the role of photosynthetic pigments is in energy capture?

The basic idea is that light photons excite the electrons in the pigments, the electrons are given up to other molecules and that energy is used in combination with other components to give the plant energy and food.
