''nuts'' , legumes and allergies, a trivial question

| This question is trivial in the sense that I am just curious about the answer. I have no need to know.
We often read of nut allergies. Peanuts are the most often discussed but discussions of other "nut" allergies such as walnuts or hickory nuts are often laced in with the stories of peanut allergies.
As a kid on a farm with walnuts, hickory nuts, peanuts, peas and other legumes like beans and alfalfa I often wondered why peanuts, which resembled peas to me, were called nuts.
Do people with "nut" allergies have allergies to green peas, beans, other legumes? |

I don't have an answer for you but I do have an additional question. If an infant is fed soy milk is he more prone to develop peanut allergies later in life? I'd like to know if any research has been done on this. Sam |

I have a hard time with food(can't eat gluten/Celiac) So I know a bit about food allergies. People who are allergic to nuts can eat peanuts. However, most places that process peanuts also process true nuts. A person eating commercial peanuts has a serious risk of cross contamination. Most avoid peanuts for that reason. I don't know why they're called nuts. A lot of people can't digest the complex carbohydrates of soy. I don't know if it can lead to a future intolerance/allergy of legumes.PJ |

| In botany, a fruit is the part of the plant that bears the seeds. There are many kinds of fruits - berry, achene, drupe, pome, and nut (and others). A nut is a dry fruit with a woody exterior. According to wikipedia, a nut contains one or sometime two seeds. Peanuts would seem to qualify for this definition except that they may contain 3 or 4 seeds as well. |

| Not sure why peanuts are called nuts (maybe they are the nuts found on peas), but can tell you that allergies are very individual. A person who is allergic to peanuts may or may not also be allergic to other nuts. A co worker is allergic to peanuts, walnuts, pecans and most other nuts but not almonds. My husband is allergic to hazelnut but ok with all other nuts and with peanuts. A good friend is very peanut allergic but fine with all other nuts. Both the peanut allergic people have no trouble with beans or peas. Below is a link to tree nut allergy, the same site has this info about peanut/soy http://www.calgaryallergy.ca/Articles/English/peanutsoyahp.htm |
