Citrus in Sahara

I saw at tv a reportage on the Sahara desert,and somewhere in the dunes a huge quantity of "citrus"!!
Could someone explain me how in dunes,where the soil is exampt of nutriment,can grow all those citrus!
I beleive that Israel,did the same,with the apport of N.P.K,and humus!

I thnk you may have answered your question when you said that they inproved the medium that they inhabit.
NPK and humus. Thats the only thing I would assume has done the trick.
Unless someone else can come up with a better answer!
